COD fraud and COD apathy share a symptom: a parcel refused at the door by someone who barely remembers ordering. Both are cheap to prevent — the buyer just needs to say "yes, I want it" once, in writing, before the label prints.
Which orders earn a confirm
Confirmation on every order is friction on good customers. The play is a filter, and the filter is the risk score: first-time customers (no history to judge), high-value COD (the refusal hurts more), weak or unverifiable addresses, and very rural PINs where the freight itself is expensive to waste. A ₹300 prepaid-shipping regular buyer gets no interruption; a ₹9,000 first-time COD to a flagged PIN gets the link.
What the confirmation buys you
Three outcomes, all wins. Confirmed: the buyer tapped "yes, deliver it" — these orders deliver at markedly higher rates because the buyer re-committed and expects the parcel. Declined: you just saved the entire cost stack — freight out, freight back, labour and stock time — for the price of one message. No response: your strongest risk signal yet; these orders get a second nudge, a call, or a hold.
Partial COD: the middle path
For categories where a straight confirm feels weak, partial COD splits the difference: ₹99–199 prepaid now, balance on delivery. Fake orders evaporate — nobody pays a deposit on a fake — while genuine buyers barely notice. It's the cheapest version of prepaid conversion that doesn't gamble the whole order on a checkout nudge.
A confirmation link doesn't add a step to the order. It deletes the freight cost of every order that was never real.
The bottom line
The cheapest refused parcel is the one that never shipped. Confirm the risky slice — new buyers, big COD, flagged addresses — and let everything else flow. Every declined order is a return stack deleted; every confirmed one is a delivery more likely to stick.
