The fake COD order is an Indian e-commerce fixture: a nonsense address, a dead phone, a high-value item, and a buyer who will refuse at the door if the parcel ever arrives. Sellers absorb it as "the cost of COD" — but fake orders don't need machine learning to catch. They fail the same checks a courier would run at the doorstep.
The signature of a fake order
Fraud is lazy. The address says "asdf" or "aaa"; the street has no number and no landmark; the phone is ten zeros or 9876543210; the PIN belongs to a different state than the city claims. Any one of these might be a bad typist. Two or more and the order was probably never meant to be delivered.
The COD signal stacks on top: fraud orders cluster on COD because refusal is free, and on high-value items because the play — when there is one — is either nuisance or a delivery-door scheme. A ₹15,000 COD to an unverifiable address is the profile to hold.
The free check stack
PIN geography. Six digits, first digit zones — a 4-series PIN claiming Gujarat fails instantly against India Post's numbering. Directory match. PIN↔city↔state against the postal directory where seeded. Street analysis. Empty, too-short, placeholder tokens, repeated characters, consonant-mash, no anchor word. Phone. 10-digit mobile syntax, placeholder patterns, all-same-digit. Each check is deterministic — provable, auditable, free per order, and wrong in a predictable direction: flagging mess, not inventing guilt.
Flag and verify — don't auto-cancel
The failure mode to avoid is the hard block: a cancelled real customer is costlier than a shipped fake. Two-plus failed checks earn a hold, then a verification step — a confirmation link, a call, or an OTP. Real buyers confirm within hours; fakes never respond. The verification response becomes the cleanest fraud signal of all — and it's also free.
Fraud detection isn't spotting criminals. It's asking a question only a real buyer can answer.
Pure Parcel flags suspicious orders on the order page — flagged addresses, dead phones, PIN mismatches — before you spend the freight.
See how →The bottom line
Most fake orders aren't sophisticated — they trip the same structural wires a careful human would notice. Run the free checks at order time, confirm the flagged slice, and the fake-order problem shrinks from a cost centre to a footnote.
