Watch how an NDR gets handled at most stores: the courier marks "customer not available", the status sits in a dashboard nobody checks, and 48 hours later the parcel is on a truck back. The buyer — who was just at work — never knew they could do anything. The fix costs less than the parcel: a link that lets them fix it themselves.

Why the phone-call model fails

Courier NDR workflows were built around calls: the courier tries to reach the buyer, plays phone tag, gives up. The buyer never sees a record of what went wrong, can't respond in their own time, and — critically — can't fix the actual problem. "Not available" might mean "deliver Thursday instead", "the address needs a landmark", or "the phone number is wrong" — three different fixes, all invisible to the caller who just wants a voice on the line.

Self-service flips the economics: send the buyer a link the moment the NDR opens. They tap it on WhatsApp or SMS, see the parcel's status, and choose: pick a new delivery day, correct the address, or decline the parcel. That response lands as structured data the courier can act on — not a voicemail.

What the page needs to do

A good self-service NDR page is deliberately thin: no login, no app install, no order lookup. The link itself is the authorization — a signed token that opens exactly one case and nothing else. Show the delivery address so a wrong one is obvious, offer a date picker with real courier windows, and an address-correction form validated before submission. After acting, the page should tell the buyer what happens next — "reattempt on Thursday" is reassurance, not just a status.

The security detail that matters: never accept a shipment ID or order number as input. The token in the URL identifies the case server-side — anything else is guessable and leaks tracking data to whoever guesses.

The buyer already wants the parcel. Give them a way to say so and most "failed deliveries" were never failures.

Pure Parcel generates a tokenized buyer link for every NDR case — reschedule, fix the address, or decline — and writes the response back to the carrier.

The bottom line

NDR recovery isn't about working harder on the queue — it's about moving the fix to the person who can actually make it. A self-service link converts dead statuses into scheduled re-attempts while the courier is still in the neighbourhood. Every NDR that becomes a delivery is freight you already paid for, finally delivering value.
