Before your parcel's weight matters, its destination's zone does — the rate card is a zone table first and a weight table second. Understanding the four-zone geography changes how you price products and which carriers you pick.

The four zones

Local: within the city — the cheapest tier. Regional: same state or ~300km radius — mid-tier. National: the rest of India — the standard rate you think of as 'shipping'. Special: northeast, hills (J&K, Himachal, UK), islands — a surcharge tier that's roughly national × 1.5–2×.

Where zones differ per carrier

Zone boundaries aren't standardised — Delhivery's 'regional' and Xpressbees' 'regional' cover different pincode sets. Your city pair might zone differently on different carriers — one reason per-order quoting surfaces different winners.

The special-zone economics

A ₹60 national-zone order prices at ₹120–150 special — same parcel, double freight. Sellers either surcharge remote shipping visibly, price to the average (lose on special-zone orders), or exclude special zones from free-shipping promises.

The strategic use

Know your zone mix: if 60% of orders ship regional, regional rates drive your freight cost — negotiate there. If you're metro-heavy with a national catalogue, the national zone is your negotiation target.

Pure Parcel runs the whole stack described here — one place for every carrier.

The playbook

1

Map your orders to zones

Your real zone mix drives which rate matters.

2

Check carriers' zone maps

Zone definitions differ — check your specific lanes.

3

Price special-zone honestly

Surcharge visibly or exclude from free-shipping.

4

Negotiate your dominant zone

The zone you ship most is where rates matter.
